The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) supports the decarbonisation of heat in buildings. It provides upfront capital grants to support the installation of heat pumps and biomass boilers in homes and non-domestic buildings in England and Wales.
Acting on behalf of property owners, installers can apply for:
- £7500 off the cost and installation of an air source heat pump
- £5000 off the cost and installation of a biomass boiler
- £7500 off the cost and installation of a ground source heat pump, including water source heat pumps
Property eligibility
The boiler upgrade scheme is open to domestic and small non-domestic properties in England and Wales.
New build properties are not eligible for the scheme, with the exception of certain ‘self-builds’.
In order to be eligible, a self-build must:
- have been built mainly using the labour or resources of the first owner
- never have been owned by a business or organisation
Grants are not available for:
- social housing – that is, any rental or owned accommodation that’s provided at lower than market value to people that could not have afforded it otherwise (including arrangements like shared ownership)
- properties that have already received government funding or support for a heat pump or biomass boiler
How to apply for The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
- You must contact suitable MCS certified installers to get quotes for the work.
- Confirm you’re eligible for the grant (your installer will tell you).
- Agree a quote with your chosen installer.
The installer will apply on your behalf on the Ofgem website.
The value of the grant will be taken off the amount you pay for installation.
Ofgem will then contact you to confirm that the installer is acting on your behalf. They might also contact you by phone or visit your property in order to check the installation.
MCS also might contact you to carry out their own checks.
